One problem of product reviews on online shopping sites is the fact, that people comment on products which they own for very little time. They might have some information on the usability of the product but not much on the longevity. A website that tries to solve this problem is exitreviews where people describe the products that failed on them.

To quote the creator of the site r/madredditscientist/:

We can then build a collection of how long products last, where they break, and how to fix them. Even if certain products are not available anymore, it still gives a good picture of brand deterioration.

Homepage of exitreviews

What is it

As of the time of this writing, there are over 700 exit reviews in the database. You can find varied items from chairs over smart doorbells to digital cameras. The submitters describe the stress points of the product and why it is no longer used. There is space for positives remarks as well with the goal to have a well-balanced review. Other users can comment on your exit review.

How can you submit

Anyone can submit an exit review, you do not need to have a user on the site, you can easily submit as a guest. After adding some mandatory pieces of information such as the brand and product name you can submit the item to the database. You can also add optional information such as a picture (pictures are always good!), the price or repair information.

Conclusion

I hope this site gains much more traction, so that we as a community can create a body of knowledge on how products behave with age. We need more initiatives such as this one to get back to the product reliability we had for many decades but have now lost in the recent years.

Thanks to r/madredditscientist/ for creating this site!
